Suriya isn’t just an actor, he’s a big one, or he wants to be seen as a big one. He’s also played by Suriya and therein lies the problem. The bigger question is this: why isn’t Jai Bhim as powerful as Visaranai? The lead character is a lawyer who has made human rights the centerpiece of his life. Are we to accept this as a film or as a public service announcement on police brutality? The fact that Jai Bhim is based on a true story and that such torture and treatment towards tribal and lower-caste people is still prevalent today demands not only your attention but also your action. As a viewer, you’ll need to remind yourself that these are actors even though some of the beatings look and feel real. Much of the film can be described as a hard watch. I had to pause several times to collect myself as the depiction of torture is raw and indigestible. Jai Bhim appears to be on a larger scale with its parameters set by Karnan and Visaranai. Nevertheless, Visaranai was unsettling from start to finish.

But, the movie managed to make its central character, a hardened cop who preaches torture, take pity on a handful of vagrants. Visaranai presented plenty of police brutality and torture. In his quest to find moral justice for his people, he becomes amoral. The protagonist, despite his stance, was not completely affable.

There was plenty of pathos but something didn’t add up in Karnan. Its depiction of caste violence was unsettling. There are films that unsettle you, but, a provocative film isn’t necessarily a powerful film. Please anticipate spelling and/or grammatical errors which will be corrected at a later date. Suriya in Jai Bhim Unsettling and underwhelming Disclaimer: The film critic is a lazy bum.
